Artist Statement
My passion is with the ocean, and I am inspired by the millions of ways, through the exploration of materials and processes that it may be portrayed. I grew up seeing the ocean from my bedroom window, and the horizon line was my hope for the future. I explore the ocean through film, clay and plaster to create three-dimensional representations. I am enthralled by the patterns in the sand at low-tide created by ocean waves. Through careful research following the moon phases, the tide and weather patterns, I cast the sand patterns with ceramic plaster with a layer of burlap to reinforce and strengthen them. I experiment with size, shape and desirable patterns. In the plaster casts, one is able to see tiny shells and stones, and the pathways created by snails and shrimp. I capture the ocean in a moment in time. They are like wave and current fossils. I will continue to follow the sand patterns at low tide, expanding my horizons and seeing what I will discover in the process. The ocean is the artist making the marks in the sand, and I am trying to be like her.

Biography
Armené lives in Greenfield, Massachusetts with her husband, Ted Hinman, and their kitten, Sphinxy. Armené received her Bachelor in Art and Film from Hampshire College in 2025. Her work is influenced by Agnès Varda, Rothko, Van Gogh, Opalka, Kusama, Alice Adams, and Selva Aparicio. She presently is plaster casting the sand patterns at the ocean at low-tide, accompanied by photographing and filming the sand patterns and creatures she finds at the ocean. When not at the ocean, she is drawing vast universes composed of tiny circles on paper. She works in clay, wood, cardboard, fibers, watercolor and acrylic painting to create multimedia and collage artworks. When she experiences the ocean, it offers healing from years of trauma. She believes through her artwork others will be able to connect to the ocean and experience its healing properties.
